Gaff enjoy success at Cockington Court Craft Centre

Categories: Latest News

Gaff Interiors and Upholstery opened in Cockington a year ago, moving to a new unit over the winter.

Since the opening, the company run by Justin Roach, has enjoyed a great year with both private work and commissions.

In order to open more hours, Justin has taken on an extra employee, Billie Sunshine, who will help to deal with the increase in enquiries.

Justin said: “Interior designers have found me through being here at Cockington Court and I’ve enjoyed many recommendations. Having Billie will allow me to open at weekends. It’s been really busy, particularly with lots of hotel work for Deer Park Country House near Honiton.”

“I’ve been getting lots of bespoke orders with headboards, chairs and other upholstery work. I love the bespoke side. Picking out the fabrics in the shape and style people like and making one offs, which will probably never be made again. I love getting my head around the designs and working out how I can make them work.”

Justin’s investments in new machinery is allowing him to expand the type of projects Gaff can take on, with new ranges planned including Icelandic sheepskins and Icelandic sheepskin chairs.

Justin added: “These are very seasonal products. They sold very well last Christmas and I will be introducing them again this year and expanding the range. I’m visiting Norway and Sweden later this year to gain some design inspiration and have a look at what they are doing with interiors.”

Justin is looking to introduce new products as Gaff is getting more footfall and all items have been selling well. Justin is also selling pieces in the new Cockington Court Visitor Welcome Point, which provides a selection of the fine works on sale at Cockington. The location of the company allows Justin to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Justin continued: “It’s going very well here, I have the perfect life. I come here with the dog and can walk in a country park with acres around me. It’s been really interesting to see what’s happening here at Cockington. I think it’s brilliant. It’s great being in an environment that cares.”

Marissa Wakefield, Cockington Court Craft Centre director, said: “’Justin is a great addition to the Craft Centre studio makers as he is a very skilled craftsperson. It’s great to see his work recognised by interior designers and hotels, resulting in lots of commissions.

“Justin has enjoyed increased footfall as Cockington is constantly changing. The Court’s regeneration continues daily with new multi-skilled crafts makers taking advantage of the studios available here. The new visitor welcome point has enabled us to engage with our customers more and share what Cockington has to offer.”
