Cockington Apple Day back by popular demand

By popular demand Apple Day will be reinstated in 2014, with the TDA at the helm.  Sunday 19 October promises to be a wonderful day out in a celebration of all things ‘apple’.

Visitors will have the opportunity to buy, taste or take home a variety locally sourced delicious food and drink in addition to perusing a fantastic selection of local handmade crafts.  Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust will put the traditional cider press through its paces turning the autumn windfall into juice and budding brewers can learn how to turn that juice into scrumptious scrumpy.

A range of activities will be on offer from creative crafts to traditional fete games and some more unusual apple themed challenges and visitors will be entertained by the likes of jugglers, storytellers and demonstrations.

Just under 3500 visitors attended Cockington’s 20th Apple Day in 2012, acknowledging the orchard fruit and the variety available throughout the UK.  The first Apple Day was held in October 1990 in the old Apple Market in Covent Garden, London, bringing fruit back there for the first time in 17 years. Since then the celebration has gained momentum and hundreds of events now take place across the UK.

Cockington Court Apple Day will have over 30 food and craft stalls, a range of mobile catering units – not to mention the resident artisans in the stable yard, sea change and cob barn craft studios. Entry to the Apple Day enclosure is £3.50 for adults and £1.50 for children, although entry to Cockington country park, gardens and craft studios remains free.

Cockington Court Centre Director Marissa Wakefield said: “We are very excited about reinstating Apple Day which has always been a very popular day out at Cockington Court. In 2014 there will be a host of new stalls and entertainment, we’re working on the programme now and we still have a number of early-bird opportunities available for exhibitors who are interested in taking part in the event.
